Facebook Rape

So in lieu of a song today, I thought I'd share a story with you. It's a very special story. It's about the Facebook Rapist.

Haven't heard of him? I hadn't either until just now. And I'm fairly sure I won't forget him anytime soon. I am a huge media whore. I read lots and lots of stories. This is the scariest story I've ever read, and I don't spook easily.

The fun part: he almost got away with it. The fact that the authorities stumbled upon the nude photos because of an unrelated investigation is what sends chills up my spine. This guy would have grown up into another Dahmer. Dude is even from New Berlin, WI, a mere ten miles from Dahmer's home town of West Allis.

Like Dahmer, it's fairly easy to predict that he will be murdered in jail by someone with daddy issues. It is for this reason I hope he is not kept in solitary.

Remember, this is a man who thinks sending a bomb threat to a school is a "fun-filled prank." I'm exceedingly happy that he's behind bars, and I'm entirely ready to meet him in my nightmares.

One More Devilish Nibble

This was the song that forced me to fall in love.

Dirty Disco Paradise

It's so rare that I find out about new artists by hearing music in public. I first heard 10,000 Maniacs in a now long gone downtown Mpls Sam Goody in 1987. I first heard Everything But The Girl at the uptown Tatters the next year. I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened, when the band has become more than just a passing fancy.

It may have just happened again.

I was lucky enough to be sitting in a downtown Dunn Bros last weekend while they were playing the grooviest, dirtiest, horniest, most gorgeous synth disco I think I have ever heard in my life. I'm very glad I got up the nerve to admit to the mustached, teenage barista that I didn't know what he was playing, and would he care to enlighten me?

Turns out he was playing an album by a French duo called Black Devil (or Black Devil Disco Club, depending on which website you're visiting). I immediately looked them up upon returning home and was stunned to read their bio. I've only had time to absorb a few of their songs, but already, within the space of only a few days, this band has been a complete revelation to me.

Negative Girl

Favorite Steely Dan song. There isn't even a close second.

I'm In Paradise Now

"If ... you become naked."

I'm not sure why I know this, but that's a Yoko Ono sample (by way of The White Album) on Paradise Found. A perfect post-hypnotic suggestion for listening to the Now single.

Meat Beat Manifesto hit their stride somewhere around 99%, and this single speaks to their power as a subliminal force. Yet another personal top ten, couldn't-survive-high-school-without-it single.

Fun fact: You don't need any substances to get stoned while listening to it.

Dead Can Dream

I was a 4AD disciple in high school, so the entirety of Dead Can Dance's first CD has been written in permanent ink on my heart for two decades. (Mensch Machine, I remember you couldn't stop raving about it.)

So how fortunate I was that this song penetrated one of my dreams early on last night, and it rang out in my sleepy head for hours and hours. I could still hear it when I woke up.

Best DCD song ever.

Algorithm

About 18 months ago I mused -- half seriously -- to my composer boyfriend that were he ever to write a song for me, it should be called Algorithm. He surprised me last week on my birthday by giving me just what I asked for.

Every time I listen to it I can't shake the feeling that a young Siouxsie Sioux should start grunting and hooting at about the one minute mark.

It is a welcome addition to my sometimes dark and chilly library.

Enjoy.
