Coil - Snow EP

Here's a little Coil to get that Christ taste out of your mouth. And what better Coil to play in late December but the iconic 1991 Snow EP? These are five remixes from Love's Secret Domain, Coil's indisputable magnum opus.

Coil - Snow EP.zip

I have fond memories of listening to this EP on my CD walkman back in the day, watching the snow fall through the window of a bus going somewhere, stoned off my sneakers. If I had to pick 5 soundtrack-to-high-school CDs, this would undoubtedly be one of them.

(Bonus: The Answers Come In Dreams versions were remixed by Meat Beat Manifesto.)

O Tenenbaums!

I hesitated to have a music blog Christmas salute, but it's been weeks since my last post. (Sorry, finals.) Anyway, in the sort of spirit of the season I offer the only Christmas song that I don't hate with every fiber of my being. In fact, I quite adore it.

Since Christmas Time Is Here was featured twice in The Royal Tenenbaums, one of my all-time favorite films, I threw a Mark Mothersbaugh treat in your stocking as well. (I can roll with the whole Christmas thing if I can think about Wes Anderson while I'm doing it.)

Christmas or no, I hope you have a good week. Be brave -- it's almost over.

1:43 In Heaven

Winter truly is the season for baroque.

You may or may not be a classical music fan, but it won't matter. This song will, for just a few bind-blowing seconds, send you straight to heaven.

Bach - An Dir, Du Furbild Grosser Frauen.mp3

I can't stop listening to it.

(From Bach's Cantatas #106, 118B & 198.)

Jungle Bizness ('93 - '95)

Another jam from the miracle maker.

Actually, I'm no miracle maker. My dj days are far behind me, and it's been a good three years since somebody ripped off my turntables.

But about a year back I did throw together - cheating, via laptop - some absolutely timeless and flawless old school jungle clips for my now-defunct podcast. That now-defunct podcast has essentially turned into this music blog, and the link has long since died.

Here it is again, in all of its squinty-eyed fabulousness. Light a blunt and enjoy. (Bonus points if you remember this shiz from the first time around.)

I'm toying around with the idea of a Bay B Kane megamix after finals, so stay stoned. Er, tuned.

Origin Of Breaks

I have drum & bass in my blood. I've loved it and followed it ever since its first incarnations in the early 90s. Since then my tastes have drifted away from dance music, but I always check back from time to time with the massive drum & bass mix database to make sure the kids are still holding it the fuck down. (They are.)

So a few years ago I decided to look up as many breakbeats as I possibly could, in their original contexts, at their original tempos, and throw them all together in one five minute long history lesson.

Jason Herrboldt - Origin Of Breaks.mp3

As with the last mix posted, I no longer have access to the artists and song titles. But if you're a true b-boy or girl, you shouldn't even need to ask. If you're not, then yeah. You've been schooled. Breakbeat started in the 60s, motherfuckers.
