Class Of '93 - Rave Hysteria Mixtape

A friend and I just watched 24 Hour Party People tonight, and it made me think of all the old dance music I used to listen to in the early 90s. It also made me want to re-upload this mix I made last year, which I think is no longer accessible on iTunes.

While making this mix I combed my archives for every rave, trance, breakbeat, jungle, and techno song I could find that was made on or before 1993 that I didn't hate. I dropped them all in my laptop, pressed frappe, and out came this megamix of early 90s candy raver nostalgia.

With Apologies To Al Franken

So I'm taking a "How To Study" class this semester, which is really a "Get Off Academic Probation Free" class, but that's neither here nor there.

We're doing a section on pre-test anxiety, and our teacher asked me to read a script out loud to the rest of the class as a kind of brief, guided meditation to introduce the students to relaxation techniques. (Can you see where this is going?)

The teacher asked everyone to close there eyes, then turned to me and signaled for me to begin reading. Just before, I managed to sneak my iPhone out of my pocket and hit the audio record button, and I wove the resulting audio in with a Stuart Smalley tape from the 90s. Honestly, what I go through for you people.

Unfinished & Unreleased

I spent almost every free hour I had during the summer of 2003 archiving my back catalog. I had a few minor-label releases, but almost all of the songs I created never saw the light of day.

Here are two songs that almost made it. Recorded around 2002, each song was written for a vocalist, and Sabedoria Profunda is just screaming for a horn solo. At one point I even had a horn player and a vocalist lined up, but it never quite came together.

The A&R departments of the labels I was working with at the time seemed unimpressed and encouraged me to work on something else. These two songs are unfinished and unreleased, but hopefully not unloved.

Ash On The Trees

I stumbled upon this song while trolling for material for this year's Halloween mixtape.

I thought it was OK the first time I heard it, but it really hit me when I fell asleep while listening to it. By the time the second movement kicked in, I was lost in a full-on Lovecraftian nightmare.

Halloween Thank You

Thank you to everyone who downloaded and/or enjoyed my 2009 Halloween mixtape! I had forty downloads, and 100 hard copies were distributed by hand to the flier tables of local cafes, second-hand clothiers, head shops, and music stores.

This has been the coolest Halloween ever.
